Rutgers University: Newark Honors Living-Learning Community

Newark, NJ

This dynamic mixed-use environment supports the personal and academic goals of college students and educators.

Located in Downtown Newark, a new development for Rutgers University reflects the mission, identity, and uniqueness of the school’s Honors Living-Learning Community (HLLC) program. Perkins Eastman’s design includes ground level retail, student residences, and a parking garage. HLLC’s innovative approach revolutionizes the notion of “honors” by creating intergenerational and interdisciplinary learning cohorts comprised of students, faculty, and community partners focused on tackling some of the nation’s most pressing social issues. HLLC’s interior consciously features multiple scales for interaction, from smaller communal spots on individual floors for study and socialization to the central courtyard that convenes the entire community. The exterior harmonizes with its urban surroundings while maintaining a unique contemporary identity with differentiated building materials and patterns. The community was developed through a public-private partnership of Rutgers–The State University of New Jersey, and RBH Group.
