Nestled within the upscale residential neighborhood of Shadyside, the historic Hunt Armory had sat vacant for decades. Working with the Pittsburgh Urban Redevelopment Authority, Pittsburgh Penguins, and The Mosites Company, Perkins Eastman reimagined an adaptive re-use of the facility to better support the city of Pittsburgh and its residents. The redevelopment concept maximizes the vaulted armory building to enclose elite training and community recreation including a NHL regulation sized ice rink, studio ice rink, locker room facilities, a strength and conditioning center, community rooms, and a café. The design plan, which delicately accommodates the building’s historic designation, also features office space and an innovative “super floor” solution for parking.
