Science City at Union Station

Kansas City, MO

A comprehensive revitalization of a historic building and urban neighborhood enlivens Kansas City.

Now a National Historic Landmark, Union Station lost its once-vital role in the city in the latter part of the 20th century. Prior to joining Perkins Eastman, EE&K designed a master plan to restore the station and its surrounding neighborhood, envisioning a vibrant downtown destination. Science City is the first in a new generation of science and technology centers that brings together an interactive museum, theater, retail, multi-modal transportation, and public space. The team’s adaptive reuse and historic preservation designs complement the historic structure while a modern expansion provides a new architectural identity for Science City. Organized into districts, Science City at Union Station encompasses a wide variety of spaces anchored by the state-of-the-art science museum. Complete with a welcoming entry made possible by extending the treasured Liberty Memorial Park, Science City at Union Station is a city-wide hub for exciting activities and large events.
