A phased campus redevelopment sets a new standard of excellence for veteran care

The Illinois Veterans Home at Quincy plans to transform veteran care and set a new standard of excellence through a phased redevelopment of its historic campus. Working collaboratively with campus leadership and the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, Perkins Eastman provided bridging design services to help create a 50-year master plan that emphasizes superior support and wellness for veterans.

As the oldest and largest veterans home in the state, this campus has more than 25 buildings across 210 acres. To honor its rich history, the design reorients new buildings around its original core, creating ample access to the heart of the campus and a strong sense of place. Throughout the site, indoor/outdoor spaces are oriented in different directions for residents to engage with nature in a variety of ways. Perkins Eastman also designated pathways and connectors within the landscape to enhance wayfinding and encourage walkability.

The VA community living centers model guided the design for 15-person households within a 251,000 sf, 210-unit long-term care environment. They are comprised of flexible spaces that can accommodate any level of care. The common areas are designed to suit a variety of individual preferences and comfort levels; they offer both large gathering areas and more intimate conversation spaces for just two or three people.

Flexible design is integral to the new 75,000 sf, 80-unit domiciliary building, with many independent living options in a supportive setting. This resident-focused design promotes independence, well-being, and connection among the veterans. Shifting from an institutional to residential design approach marks a significant transition for the campus and its evolving culture of care.
