Completed Just 19 months after design began, the LEED Gold certified Stoddert Elementary School and Community Center was the result of a collaborative design process between many community stakeholders. In addition, Stoddert was also designed for after-hours use by the community and houses the offices of Parks and Recreation. The design team took advantage of the school’s culture, which includes a student-led “Energy Patrol,” and site to create a campus that is a sustainable inspiration for the entire community. Stoddert is the first school in the District of Columbia to be fully served by geothermal system. An interactive kiosk in the heart of the school enables the students to monitor and analyze the building’s use of energy; this data is available to the interactive whiteboards throughout the school. The design encourages learning to extend into the landscape. From a double-sided stage that opens onto both the gymnasium and outdoor amphitheater to a colonnaded loggia called the porch, Stoddert now provides opportunities for users to experience the 6.5-acre urban site in different ways, including a new ball field, a community garden, and a woodland courtyard and playground.
