Columbia University: Teachers College

New York, NY

A campus-wide classroom modernization sets a national benchmark for best-in-practice multimodal classrooms at a premier institution.

Columbia University Teacher’s College offers a diverse range of programs from its historic campus in Manhattan’s Morningside Heights neighborhood. Perkins Eastman’s classroom recapitalization strategy transformed the school’s heritage classroom portfolio into a leading next generation active-learning platform. Working in collaboration with the College, the design team created refreshed multi-modal learning environments featuring 360-degree writable wall surfaces, flexible furnishings, robust media resources, and biophilic design features. Designed to maximize interaction and cognitive performance and support overall wellness, the nationally best-in-practice classrooms are rooted in educational space design and behavioral research. The new classrooms also permit a significant portion of faculty to employ active-learning methods and clearly deliver improved and learning outcomes.
