Based on a travel fellowship to Hogewey dementia village, Missing Main Street suggests an approach to residential dementia care that considers the context beyond the household or building. Existing research on the fullness of self, physical place, and authentic living serves as the backdrop for strategies to provide the often-missing link between older adults living with dementia and the communities around them. Missing Main Street posits 11 patterns of successful dementia communities for consideration by designers and operators which empower residents to experience their full selves.
