Senior living design has traditionally prioritized the resident and visitor experience, but the people caring for residents must be equally supported by the physical environment. When looking at dedicated staff areas in senior living communities, opportunities abound to apply workplace design trends from other market sectors, such as flexibility and freedom of choice, access to natural light, and blurring the lines between resident- and staff-designated spaces. A variety of benefits can stem from giving more attention to staff spaces in senior living communities, including improved employee well-being and satisfaction, decreased burnout, increased attraction and retention, and greater acceptance of the aging process. When staff are emotionally and physically supported by their work environment, they are better able to do their day-to-day tasks while also finding the meaning and purpose in their roles.
