The Cline

Seattle, WA

A catalyst for community in a transforming urban hub.

The Cline is a 243-unit market-rate apartment building that harmonizes modern living with a rapidly developing context. Located on bustling Stone Way in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood, the project offers a fresh take on urban residential architecture while acting as a catalyst for community interaction and street life. Its design draws inspiration from the surrounding neighborhood while integrating innovative solutions that cater to the evolving dynamics of work and living.

At the heart of The Cline is a design that acknowledges the history of its surroundings. The building’s textured facades and thoughtfully carved mass reflect the architectural language of the nearby Shannon & Wilson building and the former Stone Way Electric. These nods to history are intermingled with contemporary elements, resulting in a structure that feels both familiar and strikingly modern.

The building’s design reimagines how a residential community can support the evolving way in which we work and live, using this energy to bring life and activity to the street. This approach is embodied in a dynamic, street-level co-working space at the corner of 38th and Stone Way—a vibrant focal point where work and living converge.

The Cline stands apart in its effort to make space for the public realm. The significant setbacks and deep overhangs at the sidewalk provide additional space for pedestrians and protect waiting bus riders. The lushly planted central courtyard provides a welcome massing relief and a calm place of respite from the bustle of Stone Way, while linking the building’s entry to its amenities.

By embracing an innovative co-working space, a generous public realm, and a design responsive to its historical context, The Cline both enriches the lives of its residents and enhances the vitality of the neighborhood.
