Sacramento Waterfront Plan

Sacramento, CA

The next great place to live, work, and play in Downtown Sacramento

The historic Sacramento Riverfront envisions making a radical new entry to the 21st century, with a dramatic re-branding as SACTO H20 and re-positioning as “the next great place to live, work, and play in Downtown Sacramento.” Perkins Eastman won the People’s Choice award when the city put out a call for ideas to leverage the recent success of the Sacramento Kings basketball arena and link it to the riverfront with a dramatic new urban City Terrace and activated water plan. The grand urban spine and freeway underpass were reimagined as a Gateway event square. Beneath the freeway, a “great room” called The Link would provide direct access to convenient parking and serve as a home for a new visitor’s center for the region. The City Terrace, perched high above the river, will be animated with a dramatic new Spire with a viewing platform 200 feet tall offering dramatic views of the city skyline, historic bridges, the Delta King steamboat, and classic delta landscapes beyond. A new pier, visiting-boat docks, and restaurants would complement the historic waterfront. A new freeway-cap park and pedestrian bridge, furthermore, would connect the marooned Crocker Museum with the waterfront and the west bank of the Sacramento River. New infill development throughout the waterfront district would provide real-estate development opportunities to create a robust economic base for this vibrant, 24/7 community. A proposed light-rail route will be run along the new City Terrace as an urban streetcar.
