The relocation of the City of Guayaquil’s Aeropuerto Jos Joaquin De Olmedo realigns cultural and public transit infrastructure, introduces new resiliency and conservation measures, and supports a sustainable global agenda. Three distinct districts—Marina, Central, and Garden—comprise walkable, mixed-use, live-work districts connected by a broad urban boulevard, the “Estero Central” and a linear park with a canal, offering a place to stroll or bike, with small cafés and sitting areas placed throughout. With an integrated strategy centered on sustainability and water management, the design reconnects the city to the waterfront, provides for easy access to transportation including a new airport, and introduces a new state-of-the-art convention center and unique destination for ecotourism, education, and research.
