Long Beach, CA

A sensitive renovation, addition, and museum expansion within a midcentury campus building designed by prominent modernist architects.

In 1993, the University Art Museum (UAM) was relocated to the Horn Center, the university’s former North Library, designed by noted mid-century-modern campus architect Edward Killingsworth’s office and constructed in 1987. Since the initial move, UAM had been serving the campus with contemporary exhibitions and displays of student work, but it had severe exhibition and storage-space limitations, and its entrance was obscured. The museum commissioned a renovation and expansion, which took place concurrently with a separate project to renovate the entire Horn Center. The museum work added roughly 4,000 square feet, most of which is dedicated to a new Main Gallery with moveable walls, allowing for multiple exhibitions at a time. The effort was made possible through an endowment by artist and philanthropist Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld, after whom the museum was renamed in 2019. The museum now has enough gallery and storage space to accommodate all its collections, in addition to a dramatic and welcoming new entry that has significantly increased attendance. The north and south courtyards have also been renovated to include a sculpture garden and new seating areas. The rest of Horn Center, meanwhile, was repurposed to house multiple general-education classrooms and lecture halls in addition to a computer lab and collaborative student study space.

This project was renovated and expanded by Pfeiffer prior to joining Perkins Eastman.
