Benjamin Banneker Academic High School: Signage + Graphics

Washington, DC

Signage and graphics celebrate the school’s influential context within Washington, DC's history and Banneker's contributions to American history.

Benjamin Banneker Academic High School is one of the highest-performing public schools in Washington, DC. Accordingly, the new building is designed to foster its strong culture, provide state-of-the-art labs and instructional spaces, and create a “collegiate ambiance” that will provide a transitional environment to the next step in a life of inspired learning.

The school pays homage to its namesake and his many talents, inventions, and contributions both to Washington, DC, and American history through thoughtful interpretive signage located on the exterior plaza and in key moments throughout the interior.

Outside, A colorful series of freestanding pylons create an interpretive experience for students and staff of the school, as well as for local residents and visitors to the school’s cross-through plaza.

Inside, A graphic tribute celebrates Benjamin Banneker and his many talents, inventions, and contributions both to Washington, DC, and American history upon entry into the school. Elsewhere, a mural stretches down the hall illustrating the new school building’s sustainable and environmentally friendly features.  Several school pride graphics are also introduced near and inside of the gymnasium to activate the athletic spaces.
