An organization that combines great recipes with science and compelling stories, and experienced talented and well-known chefs, America’s Test Kitchen’s headquarters is part working commercial kitchen, part television studio, and part office. The large-scale expansion supports its two televised cooking shows, extensive website team, and publications and cookbooks. The facility includes an open workspace and support spaces, multiple state-of-the-art test kitchens, a food publications library, three dedicated television and video studios, multiple photo and edit studios, and a large general purpose kitchen dedicated to recipe tasting and testing, and product testing. The roster of cutting edge equipment includes 62 ovens, 18 ranges, and 35 refrigerators.
The move to the 100-year-old Innovation and Design Building from ATK’s longtime Brookline brownstone more than doubled the company’s space and provides room for much-needed growth. The high ceilings, abundance of natural light, large floor plates, and industrial aesthetic of the massive eight-story former military warehouse provided the flexibility, functionality, and technology to place the culinary arts at the heart of the design. The building also appealed to ATK because of the carefully curated creative class of tenants, including design agencies, specialized manufacturing facilities, technology start-ups, and research and development firms.
Located on a single floor, the new location fosters an environment that encourages collaboration and creativity for more than 200 staff. Conference rooms embody ATK’s festive and collaborative spirit; each detailed with tasteful images of food. For example, the room labeled “Greens” is embellished with drawings of kale, spinach, and watercress. Special attention was paid to high traffic functionality, safety, as well as camera-friendly lighting, acoustics, and finish and color palettes. The sound-proof studios feature top-of-the-line kitchen equipment. Significant team coordination was required to incorporate the infrastructure needs for this commercial testing and cooking environment.
