Situated at the heart of Doha, Al Doha Grand Park is a 506-acre park strategically positioned between the growing city and the sea. Perkins Eastman is providing review and management of the master plan and landscape development as well as architectural design for the 91 built structures within the park. Buildings, ranging in size, include the main gates, an outdoor amphitheater, parade stands, subway entrances, the Doha Wheel, the Children of Qatar Education and Entertainment Center and the Waterfront Gourmet Restaurant. Specialty gardens and cafés have been planned on a more intimate scale, allowing the park to accommodate a large variety of activity and providing meeting places for families and friends, as well as annual national celebrations. In addition to using local, regional, and recycled materials, a sustainable approach was stressed through the use of screens, moucharabieh, natural ventilation, façade layering, pergolas and other shading elements. The design’s sensitivity to the natural, historical, and cultural elements of Qatar creates a new paradigm for the city of Doha and will act as a catalyst to future development.
