AARP Oak Health Club

Ashburn, VA

Perkins Eastman helped AARP open its first health club in the country in booming Loudoun County, Virginia, outside of Washington, DC.

The Health Club’s manifesto of strength and commitment inspired its design, and also speaks to its location at the intersection of a major city and a more suburban community. It provides a place where the complexity of the urban environment meets and intertwines with the organic nature of growth outside the city grid.

Elements of industrial shapes and finishes mix with those of natural materials and plantings; the combination provides a soothing, modern overall aesthetic, expressed through touches of greenery, strong branded coloring, and industrial metal accents.

The sense of community is a central element of AARP Oak Health Club’s vision. It plays out with an intentional progression of the space from one zone to another: there’s a sensible flow between the green wall, work zone, innovation zone, locker rooms, and workout zone. Ceiling feature finishes, glass walls, and a variety of heights create a visual connection between these zones, making an originally bland, square space more dynamic, exciting, and appealing.
