Shion Iwaizumi

Senior Associate

“A hospital is a community, a space where both patients and clinicians may experience some of their most difficult days and some of their best days. As designers, we should continuously learn about their experiences so we can focus on space-making that eases the experience of these complex moments in life.”

From five years old, you could find Shion cutting out floorplans from magazines, drawing neighborhood plans, or creating detailed sketches of houses during his playtime. Hundreds of pages of sketched floorplans, elevations, and designs from his youth foreshadowed what he would become today: an architectural designer and medical planner who’s continuing his lifelong  passion for design. Spending half of his youth in Japan and the other half in the US, Shion expanded his design eye and approach while enhancing his communication skills. As both a first-generation immigrant and first-generation college graduate, Shion chases his other passion for helping others, focusing on societal contribution through hospital design. His current expertise focuses on large-scale, multi-phase international hospital planning. Shion believes balancing patient experience, user needs, and evidence-based design excellence contributes to a successful hospital plan.
