“Whether we’re working with a small community hospital, a large academic medical center, or an international healthcare campus, we always have an obligation to be good listeners—and to apply knowledge and experience to our client’s vision.”

Michael’s interest in drawing, designing, and building came naturally, as he grew up watching his father and others who worked within the construction industry. He pursued similar aspirations in architecture school and urban planning through college and with each internship and job beyond. Early in his career, he leaned into a healthcare-planning focus and enjoyed the interactive process with client teams. The practice of healthcare felt like a calling, since he had vivid memories visiting family members and loved ones in various hospitals when he was growing up. He found those experiences to be lacking, with mazes of corridors, little privacy in double and triple patient rooms, and environments that created more stress and unease than comfort, calmness, and healing. “It gave me a sensitivity to how important planning and designing healthcare environments was for the family experience as well as the staff and the communities who depend on hospitals and doctors to help the healing process. I felt I could have a long-lasting impact in the healthcare sector, which would personally be most fulfilling to me, ” he says.

Midway through his career, Michael started working internationally in firm-wide business-development strategies, leading design teams in the United Arab Emirates and Southeast Asia. These opportunities broadened his healthcare experience and knowledge by blending western practices with eastern cultures into the design of new large hospitals and clinics.

Michael’s constant travel companion is his set of golf clubs. He can usually be found on the links with clients and consultants on his weekends in Asia and other locales overseas. He’s also forged wonderful relationships with industry consultants, expats, and local businesses everywhere he goes through continued involvement with ASHE, the American Chamber of Commerce, and various charities.
