Penn State University Shields Building: Signage + Graphics

State College, PA

Experiential graphics celebrate student aspirations at Penn State University, as part of the Shields Building renovation.

The Shields Building at Penn State houses the university’s registrar, bursar, undergraduate admissions office, and the office of student aid. It’s described as having “the essential university offices that assist students throughout their entire duration as a student.” It was therefore crucial for university officials to make students feel at home there, and entice prospective students to enroll.

While Perkins Eastman’s Pittsburgh studio was working on a larger renovation to the Shields Building, Frank was brought in to create a large, aspirational wall graphic at the entry, where prospective students could imagine themselves being a part of Penn State. The graphic is a montage of graduation and architectural photos with the student refrain, “We are Penn State!” overlaid on top.

In addition to the wall graphic, Frank created a series of wayfinding graphics and signage for the lower-level Teaching and Learning with Technology department; the graphics lead the eye across a wall and down the stairs, giving the department a presence on the main floor.
