“When I look out at the built environment, I realize that everything I see was either carefully and sensitively designed with positive intention, or it wasn’t. Every day I have a choice in my work to be intently mindful of the decisions I make and how they affect those around me,” Gerry says of his work. “I strive to do it critically and responsibly, but my North Star is to bring harmony, utility, comfort, pleasure, inclusiveness, community, vitality and joy.”
Gerry grew up in Texas and began practice in 1986. His good fortune has allowed him to work across North and Central America, Japan, China, Southeast Asia, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. A two-year stint in Dubai was perhaps the most challenging and rewarding.
Yet between all these diverse places and cultures, he says, his North Star still prevails. Communities gather, celebrate, grow, learn, and nurture in similar ways. Deep down, he explains, there is respect and responsibility for each other and the environment we inherit, create, sustain, and inhabit.
