“I have been inspired since youth by many teachers, mentors and colleagues,” Michael says, especially Roger H. Clark, his Masters professor for whom he researched the illustrated Precedents in Architecture, an international publication that uses historical precedents as a trigger for developing clear ordering principles in building design. Michael is therefore passionate about creating innovative learning environments that cultivate brilliance. Programming drives his process to satisfy human needs through meaningful design responses. In particular, he specializes in the transformative adaptive reuse of existing—often historic—buildings as one of the most sustainable acts an architect can perform. “I believe that successful buildings must combine design excellence with skillful project management,” he says, and his commitment to thought leadership in this area is evident through frequent presentations and participation in the local, regional, and national architectural and planning community.
