New PBS Video Celebrates Groundbreaking of Montevideo and Two Other Veteran’s Homes in Minnesota

A new Pioneer PBS video celebrates the news that Minnesota will soon have three new veterans’ homes for retired service members. Located in Montevideo, Bemidji, and Preston, MN, these Perkins Eastman-designed homes will offer care, amenities, and gathering spaces for community events and intergenerational living.

Following the “Small House” model instilled by the Veteran’s Health Administration, Perkins Eastman leads design transformations at state and federal veterans’ homes and veterans’ resident-care campuses across the country. This breadth of knowledge and expertise has contributed to more than 45,000 healthcare beds over the firm’s 40-year history.

“We are inspired by the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs’ commitment to veterans throughout the state by building these three new homes. Our team has enjoyed getting to know the people of each area and working with them to design homes that represent the individual cultures and regions of Montevideo, Preston, and Bemidji.” – Jerry Walleck, AIA, Managing Principal for Perkins Eastman

Montevideo is a small, tight-knit community with a rich history of military service. Positioned to assist rural Minnesota’s underserved veteran population, the new home will offer care, amenities, and gathering spaces for community events and intergenerational living.

Bemidji, the largest commercial center between neighboring Grand Forks and Duluth, is a community steeped in military tradition and history. Its new veterans’ home reflects the city’s values by offering care, a variety of amenities, and a scenic location for its underserved veteran population.

Located in the quiet town of Preston, the new veterans’ home sits atop a bluff overlooking the surrounding farmlands and adjacent golf course. Committed to providing care to underserved veterans, its presence within the community serves as a reminder of their contribution and commitment to service.

Perkins Eastman is collaborating with Wold Architects and Engineers on the three Minnesota veterans’ homes, all of which are anticipated for completion by Spring, 2023.
