Robert understands that people respond to the natural and built environment in complex physical and emotional ways, and achieving a successful design involves extensive planning and teamwork between the client, community, bankers and regulators, and everyone on the design and construction teams. Robert’s expertise in in this arena is informed by more than 40 years of design and construction in commercial, hospitality, housing and mixed-use environments—both new and adaptive reuse. With his expertise in zoning and land use, he has often helped clients uncover added potential in their developments, sometimes significantly increasing the floor area of a development.

Robert has served on numerous professional committees throughout his career, including the New York Building Code Revision Committee; the Mayor’s Building Industry Advisory Council; The New York Task Force for Persons with Disabilities; and the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects’ Housing and Building Codes committees, where he chaired the latter. His committee work in rewriting codes to facilitate the development of affordable housing earned an AIA Citation for Design Excellence.

Through extensive work with developers and institutional clients, Robert has developed particular expertise in multi-family housing (market rate, affordable, and special needs), land-use planning, codes, zoning, and the public approval process. He also teaches at New York University’s Schack Institute of Real Estate about New York City building codes and zoning and their impact on development in the city.
