For the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York City, Perkins Eastman designed a new stand-alone DNA Forensic Biology Laboratory to handle the office’s large case load. The new building, elegantly standing at the corner of First Avenue and East 26th Street, houses numerous forensic laboratories including a casework analysis lab to identify perpetrators, an exemplar lab to process people known to be at the crime scene and to process paternity samples, a high-sensitivity lab for property crimes, an in-situ lab for ascertaining if genetic defects causing death have been transmitted within a family, and a mitochondrial lab for body identification and missing persons cases. The advanced facility also houses a scanning electron microscope and numerous additional research, training, and scientific labs in addition to support spaces like offices, storage, and a conference center.
