The Walt Whitman Shops introduces a pedestrian street with both outdoor and indoor shopping experiences in order to compete in the evolving retail marketplace. The new design provides street-facing retail frontages that offer shoppers the welcoming experience of a quiet downtown stroll rather than the experience of navigating a crowded mall. Perkins Eastman transformed Long Island’s former Walt Whitman Mall, designing an addition along its service façade of outward facing retail and restaurants and a series of high quality public areas connecting inside and out. The design brings a series of distinct storefronts with stunning details, a central plaza marked by distinctive landscaping, and a streetscape including a statue of Whitman himself. The interior design features improved seating and services areas as well as a grand new center court that greets visitors with accented natural lighting, decorative flooring, and comfortable lounge seating.
