Located in the Robotics Row area of Pittsburgh’s vibrant Strip District, Smith & Nephews R&D and Medical Education Training Center supports groundbreaking research and development of robotic surgical systems, and the training of healthcare professionals. Perkins Eastman’s design for the new headquarters transformed three floors of a former cardboard box warehouse. Now called The Stacks, the warehouse building is part of Three Crossings 2.0, a development previously master planned by Perkins Eastman. Original steel roof trusses and rough-hewn wood ceiling planks provided the initial inspiration for the design, which incorporates Smith + Nephew’s workplace branding guidelines and speaks to Pittsburgh’s maker culture with its mix of colors and materials. Connected by a distinctive wood and glass staircase, the three floor workplace include a reception area, secure high-bay makerspace, prototyping labs, collaboration zones, enclosed offices, small nooks, and lounges. Industrial-grade garage doors on the ground floor open to an exterior courtyard, where staff can connect with one another and the city that surrounds them.
