University of Illinois Springfield Library Commons

Springfield, IL

The new multi-story Library Commons is envisioned as a student-centric, integrated learning environment.

The new Library Commons reflects the University of Illinois at Springfield’s commitment to providing a high-touch, student-centered educational experience. The Commons’ focus is on preparing students for success in their studies and careers. It will offer a mix of collaborative settings, hands-on workspaces for hi- and low-tech experiments, and technology-rich spaces that enhance digital literacy and data engagement. The Commons is the university’s new home for library resources and expertise, as well as several student-facing academic and support units and instructional spaces of various sizes. The ascending spiral, representing a student’s educational journey and the process of discovery, is the basis of the Library Commons’ outward appearance, as well as its internal organization.
