Sofia grew up in Caracas, Venezuela. Since she was very young, she’d always known she was an architect—She didn’t feel like she had to become one; she already was one. Since she earned her formal degree in 2002, Sofia has developed diverse local and international experience, starting right after she graduated when she opened her own multi-disciplinary design-build studio in Caracas, specializing in innovative and environmentally responsible design. Her next chapter came eight years later when she moved to Monterrey, Mexico, and opened a new studio, strengthened by the business and mentoring skills she learned in Venezuela. While there, she grew further into becoming a strong project manager with an ability to communicate a clear design vision. Her next act brought Sofía further north to Toronto, where she led complex, multi-stakeholder, and multi-disciplinary transit projects. She has delivered large-scale rail transit and transit-oriented development projects for conventional, public-private partnership, and design-build delivery models. She now leads the Vancouver studio at VIA—A Perkins Eastman Studio and is head of its Transportation practice area.
