Philips: Pittsburgh Innovation Center

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
A global leader in the development of innovative sleep and respiratory solutions, Philips Respironics desired a new space that aligned with their Workplace Innovation Program—a program based on the principles of shared space, flexibility, mobility, and sustainability. With a significant focus on attracting the best talent, the organization sought a design solution that supported their mission by leveraging state-of-the-art technology, coupled with analog-type work tools. Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood, which is in close proximity to top-tier universities and health systems, provides the ideal location to support this strategic goal.

Their dynamic new workplace serves as the prototype for the Digital Hub’s operations. It provides a creative environment for new product development, marketing, and co-creation with outside companies and the local institutional community. The space promotes connectivity and collaboration by providing free-address, desk sharing, and alternative work settings—crucial requirements to attracting and retaining top employees.

The open, flexible space incorporates “scrum development process” areas that support cross-functional, multi-learning team members that do everything, end-to-end when developing a product. Team and focus rooms are located throughout the space to maximize use and efficiency. Serving as the office hub, the pantry was designed to serve as an alternative workplace for employees and visitors, and to support Philips’ vision of hosting informative events for its institutional and corporate partners. Leveraging the design aesthetic of Philips’ heritage, the design team parlayed the clean, spare lines of Dutch design in the new Digital Hub. Additionally, a cue from Philips’ expertise in the respiratory market is reflected in the pantry ceiling which is designed to appear as though it is “breathing”—a metaphor for the type of product development occurring in the new workplace.
