Kumkang Penterium IT Towers

Anyang, South Korea
The Kumkang Housing Company first commissioned Perkins Eastman in 2007 to design a landmark mixed-use office complex in Anyang City, located 16 km of Seoul’s city center. In collaboration with local architecture firm Hanwon Forum Design Group, the resulting 1.4 million sf complex comprises two 22-story Penterium IT Towers, which sit atop a two-story podium and parking block. The office towers’ exterior is composed of two very different facades: the front elevation and central plaza comprise a series of folded glass curtain wall planes with vertical light boxes along the edges, while the rear facades are constructed of a more minimalist glass-paneled vertical window wall system. On the site’s western edge sits the complex’s retail component, which is easily accessible by pedestrians and includes a sunken courtyard, allowing light to penetrate the buildings’ lower levels. Construction of the office and retail complex was completed in 2009.

A new Penterium IT Tower in Anyang, designed in collaboration with local firm Junglim Architecture, is slated for completion in late 2016. The 20-story tower is composed of two vertical volumes, with a design that emphasizes a more dynamic approach from all angles. With the success of the first Penterium IT Towers complex in Anyang, Perkins Eastman was brought onto the team to design the building exterior. Its angled massing and slight triangulation of the curtain wall lends the overall structure a complex yet elegant form.
