Hunt Armory Ice Complex / Perkins Eastman

Hunt Armory Ice Complex

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Nestled within the upscale residential neighborhood of Shadyside, the historic Hunt Armory had sat vacant for many years. Working with The Mosites Company, Perkins Eastman was tasked with reimaging the facility to support the city of Pittsburgh and its residents. Realizing there is not a single, covered sheet of ice within the city limits, the design team set out to design a recreational ice rink. The redevelopment concept includes a NHL regulation sized ice rink, studio ice rink, locker room facilities, a strength and conditioning center, community rooms, and a café. Approximately 25,000 sf of leasable office space is also planned within a carefully designed addition that compliments the building’s historic designation. The primary concept and design strategy includes the insertion of a large “super floor” approximately 12 feet above the existing ground floor level – allowing for 110 indoor, at-grade parking spaces. The new “second” floor level contains the two sheets of ice and seating for up to 500 spectators beneath the 75-foot high, 310-foot long barrel-vaulted roof — a dramatic space ideally suited for large scale events.
