The interior renovation of City View Apartments restored an I.M. Pei-designed apartment tower to its original modernist design aspiration. The interior of the 1960s-era brutalist structure, indicative of Pei’s work from this period, had lost its design purity during renovations performed over the past several decades. The design team conducted a full interior renovation of the 11,000 sf lobby to create an array of on-site amenities for residents while respecting the building’s architectural heritage. Taking cues from both published I.M. Pei works and other modernist interiors, the design team reconfigured the lobby spaces to provide an expansive “Amenity Hall” that takes advantage of the structure’s high ceilings, large rhythmic windows, and views to the city. Freestanding custom millwork divides the larger hall into intimate activity zones within the larger space. The natural walnut, travertine, and eclectic furnishings work together to re-imagine a modernist aesthetic while making the interior design and amenities functional and livable.
