Green Chimneys School

Brewster, New York
Green Chimneys is a social services agency providing support and care to children and young adults. Perkins Eastman has completed several projects for this organization over a ten-year period, both at their Manhattan location and on their “farm” campus in Brewster, New York.

The firm designed two new classroom buildings, a new school administration building, a new central maintenance building and renovations to several existing structures including the school’s athletic/natatorium facilities. Previous work included a new classroom facility and a special dormitory, as well as master planning for the Green Chimneys campuses.

The planning and design of the new buildings establish a new model for further improvements proposed for the campus. Rather than building one large complex, the program was divided into three buildings and the massing of each building was further broken down into smaller components. Non-institutional materials with strong vernacular references were used for the exterior of the buildings, including board and batt cedar siding and standing seam metal roofs. Warm, natural materials, including maple hardwood and carpet, were selected for interior finishes, being sympathetic to children who make this campus their home.
