American International School Dhaka

Dhaka, Bangladesh
With a desire to extend their success as a member of the global network of top-tier international schools and in direct response to an ongoing need for quality primary and secondary education in the region, the American International School/Dhaka (AIS/D) Board of Trustees approved the strategic aim of taking a closer look at the facilities in relation to better accommodating the space needs of a 21st century educational environment in Dhaka. Perkins Eastman was hired to partner with the school to use a step-by-step approach in not only understanding the core needs of the community, but also the aspirational image and vision for the future.

As a premier international and IB world school, AIS/D looks to feature 21st century educational environments infused with a reverence for regionalism and culture. In order to meet this unique mix of both global leadership and local sensitivity, international best practices are applied with respect to curriculum support, space allocation, and design. To minimize disruption and safety to the existing operations of the AIS/D community, the campus alterations are planned as a phased construction effort. Capacity and the utilization rate of space is examined as part of the pre-design study and included as part of the development strategy.

With the enrollment expected to grow from the current 750 students, by re-allocating spaces and expanding, renovating, or creating new spaces, the school is able to offer a 21 century educational experience. Updates include the expansion of the physical education and playspaces with a new physical education lab, gymnasium, and courtyard; new performance theater; and a new cafeteria.
