Walt Whitman Shops

Huntington Station, New York
The Walt Whitman Shops, formerly known as Walt Whitman Mall, now offers an enhanced retail landmark address to the Long Island community with a 72,000 square-foot, one- and two-story addition, running the entire length of the preexisting mall. The Shops is anchored by the department stores Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, and Lord & Taylor. The expansion and new design is transformative, adding a central neighborhood plaza entrance marked by flowerbeds, a courtyard, and a new statue of Mr. Whitman himself, together creating an iconic destination and “relaxed luxury” environment for leisure and shopping.

The focal point of the Shops’ interior redesign is Center Court. Once an underused intersection, this inviting space is encircled by elevated wooden louvers that greet visitors with a mix of earth tones and accented natural light amid comfortable lounge seating. Other interior services include the addition of seating areas throughout the building as well as upgrades to restrooms, lighting, and the main entranceways. Perkins Eastman’s exterior redesign also repositioned the parking area to make way for more green space and pedestrian use along the Shops’ perimeter. The varied façade now highlights each retail storefront, lending visitors the experience of taking a quiet downtown stroll rather than navigating a crowded mall.
