Perkins Eastman | Sanchez Theatre

Sanchez Theatre

Guayaquil, Ecuador
Desirous of attracting international performers to Guayaquil, Ecuador, local business Carlos Sanchez Aguilar hired Perkins Eastman to design a world-class performance venue that would use a very local Latin American vocabulary and vernacular. Perkins Eastman designed the performing arts building not only for opera, but also as a venue for musical and dance performances. In addition to the 1,000-seat main theater, there is a 150-seat black box performance space as well as extensive back-of-house facilities that features rehearsal space, dressing rooms, and offices, as well as the box office. A separate service building accommodates emergency generators, air conditioning units, and power transformers to assure a higher sound isolation in the performance space.

Perkins Eastman consulted with premier acousticians, lighting designers, and equipment engineers in order to achieve a high level of building performance. The distinctive façade firmly roots the theater in its context, linking it  to a significant local building named the “Casa Rosada,” or Pink House, known and loved by the locals.
