Guangzhou Metro OCC Headquarters Building

Guangzhou, China
Perkins Eastman won an international design competition for the 230,000 sm Guangzhou Metro Headquarter and OCC. The program included a 45-story Headquarters office tower, Operations/Command Center, a 34-story office tower, a 34-story service apartment tower, a 6-story shopping center, and bus terminal. Considering the various program elements and site constraints, as well as the limited coverage of the site, the design concept evolved starting with simple diagrams to optimize the site plan and the placement of program zones based on synergies between the programmatic elements and the givens.

During the design phase, three different approaches to the design were developed based on the idea of contrast, counterbalance, and integrity. Each share the following common core principles: timeless architecture; simple, elegant architecture to contrast the surrounding context; and use of appropriate technology to support the architecture and minimize the buildings' impact on the environment.

Guangzhou Metro will be an example of the People’s Republic’s commitment to a sustainable future. Effective integrated sustainable design combines not only green site strategies but also indoor environment strategies, equally important measures that include daylighting, air quality, and thermal comfort.
