Fairleigh Dickinson University: Fitness Center

Teaneck, New Jersey
Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Fitness Center expansion was a result of a strategic effort to improve student life and amenities on their Metropolitan Campus. Perkins Eastman studied options for the expansion and completed the design that enables the facility to triple in size, while providing a modern and harmonious design that fits within its suburban setting.

The resulting design preserves the original brick façade of the 1947 building while retrofitting the existing utilities and systems. The expansion adds two new side volumes surrounding their central gymnasium. The new fitness/exercise area was designed with large floor to ceiling glass window providing views to the central gym; and the central gym was fully renovated to incorporate continuous clerestory windows to enhance the quality of light. The existing space was renovated to provide offices, meeting space, and a student snack lounge; while locker rooms and ancillary spaces were reconfigured to improve circulation and accessibility.

Inside, students will enjoy a large central court for pick-up basketball and volleyball games. A series of fitness/health rooms now have modern equipment, an area devoted to cardiovascular exercise equipment, and an aerobics and dance studio.
