East End Cooperative Ministry

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The new 50,000 sf Community House, which consolidates the programs of the East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) while enabling the organization to improve and expand its services, is LEED Platinum certified. Perkins Eastman’s charge was to incorporate the most innovative sustainable technologies, materials, and construction techniques while simultaneously preparing a community resource that would stand as an example of social good.

The green building measures reduce energy consumption by 40-50%, water consumption by 20-30%, and the storm water load on the public sewage system by 100%. The facility is a model of responsible development and environmental sustainability for the community at large, and for the individuals that EECM serves.

Located on an urban brownfield site, the Community House incorporates community education and enrichment programs, children and youth development programs, meal preparation and service, a homeless shelter, urban gardening, and a center for recuperative care.
