Perkins Eastman | City Tech Project

City Tech

Brooklyn, New York
Founded in 1946, New York City College of Technology (City Tech) is one of the larger public institutions of technology in New York State, with more than 14,000 students in 63 registered programs—among them engineering and architectural technologies, computer, entertainment technology, health professions, advertising and publishing, hospitality, business, and law.

Perkins Eastman designed a new 365,000 sf academic building in downtown Brooklyn on an L-shaped site directly across from the school's main campus for The City University of New York. The new facility significantly alters the face of City Tech, creating a new campus gateway along Jay Street while enhancing the surrounding urban fabric. The dramatic contemporary design incorporates a cantilevered academic volume that is suspended over a sculptural  theater and gymnasium assembly space.

The new facility houses classrooms; laboratory and support space for an allied health and science curriculum in radiology, dental hygiene, restorative dentistry, nursing, biological sciences, bio-research, chemistry, and vision care; a 1,000-seat theater; and a 800-seat spectator gymnasium. The environmentally sustainable project is registered for Silver LEED certification.
